Overview of On-Grid Solar Systems
An on-grid solar system, also called a grid-tied system, is connected directly to the local electricity grid. It allows you to generate your own electricity during the day and draw power from the grid when needed — ensuring a seamless power supply.
One of the biggest advantages of installing an on-grid solar system is the government subsidy, making it more affordable than ever before. Depending on your system size, homeowners in India can get a subsidy between ₹30,000 and ₹78,000.
For instance:
-
3 kW on-grid system in Bhopal (with subsidy): ~ ₹1,35,000
-
5 kW on-grid system in Bengaluru (with subsidy): ~ ₹3,00,000
What Is an On-Grid Solar System?
An on-grid solar system connects to your electricity provider through a bi-directional (net) meter. During the day, your solar panels generate electricity for your home; any extra power is sent back to the grid. At night or during cloudy weather, your home draws electricity from the grid when solar power is insufficient.
This setup includes:
Solar panels
Solar inverter
Mounting structures
Bi-directional meter
Electrical accessories (cables, junction boxes, connectors, etc.)
Together, these components form a robust and efficient system that can meet nearly 100% of a household’s energy requirements.
Key Components of an On-Grid Solar System
1. Solar Panels
These are the heart of your system. Installed facing the south for maximum sunlight, they convert solar energy into direct current (DC) electricity.
2. Solar Inverter
The inverter converts DC into alternating current (AC) — the usable form of electricity for your home. Publix Energy uses advanced inverters that ensure smooth conversion and maximum efficiency.
3. Mounting Structures
Our prefabricated, hot-dip galvanized steel structures are engineered to withstand winds up to 170 km/h and prevent corrosion — ensuring long-term durability.
4. Solar Accessories
Includes high-quality AC/DC cables, junction boxes, earthing kits, and MC4 connectors — all essential for safety, stability, and long-term performance.
5. Bi-Directional (Net) Meter
Tracks both power sent to and drawn from the grid, ensuring transparent billing and proper net metering.
How Does an On-Grid Solar System Work?
Solar panels capture sunlight and produce DC power.
The solar inverter converts DC to AC.
The bi-directional meter records how much energy is imported/exported.
Your home appliances use solar power first, reducing your grid consumption.
Excess electricity is exported to the grid for credits on your bill.
At night, power is drawn from the grid as usual.
This system ensures you enjoy uninterrupted power and significant electricity bill savings month after month.
Government Subsidy on On-Grid Solar
Under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, homeowners can avail subsidies as follows:
| System Size | Subsidy Amount |
|---|---|
| 1 kW | ₹30,000 |
| 2 kW | ₹60,000 |
| 3 kW and above | ₹78,000 |
Additional Subsidy for Uttar Pradesh
₹15,000 per kW (1–2 kW systems)
₹30,000 (for systems ≥2 kW)
So, a 3 kW system in UP can get a total subsidy of ₹1,08,000!
Return on Investment (ROI)
Installing a 3 kW on-grid solar system can save up to ₹16–17 lakhs over 25 years.
The payback period is typically 3 to 5 years, after which you enjoy free electricity for two decades or more.
With rising electricity tariffs (3–6% annually), your savings grow year after year.
